Brenda,

A long-distance family matter came up, I am stuck on this side of town until later this evening. I wonder if you would be so kind as to share the following with BFSA president and members:

1. How might we, as a collective, get more minority students into the YSU Honor's College pipeline? In my almost five years at YSU, I have only had one student of color (Toni Marie) to ask if she could complete a honor's project. Last semester, I worked with four students on projects for which they received honors credit for Introduction to Sociology. Students came from diverse disciplines (e.g., nursing, business, political science, and exercise science). However, none was a student of color. Honors College membership looks good on a resume and a graduate school application. Not knowing a lot about Ohio's Early College program (I don't believe Chicago had one), is this something that BFSA could work on with the Youngstown Public Schools System , so that talented students from YPSS would be directed to our Honor's College soon after acceptance?

2. Speaking of YPSS students, I am pleased to announce that sociology student Ms. Shanelle Toney began graduate studies in School Counseling at YSU in January 2011, and sociology student Mr. Gregory Jones graduated from the YSU Early College program with honors this Spring. Gregrory will resume his studies at YSU in the fall.

Thanks.

In solidarity,

Denise A.
